German car maker BMW has unveiled a radical new concept car as part of its centenary celebrations, called the Vision Next 100.
The vehicle, which is covered in armadillo-like scales, can switch between autonomous and self-drive modes with the interior also changing accordingly.
Hazards unseen to the driver are captured by cameras and displayed on the windscreen.
A malleable outer shell contorts with movement of the car, and as the vehicle speeds up, the back of the car lengthens in order to decrease the drag.
The armadillo like scales also change colour when a hazard is perceived nearby.
Much of the technology is yet to be invented, but as BMW designer Adrian von Hooydonk said, the concept is the “first step” towards the future.
